Medical Decision Support Systems (MDSS)
1/2. Semester
5 ECTS | 4 SWS
Oral Exam (M)
Improve Patient Care with Intelligent Decision Support Systems: Develop Clinical Decision Support (CDS) functions for electronic health records, learn how medical knowledge can be processed automatically, and evaluate the benefits, limitations, and practical applications of modern clinical decision support systems.
Contents
- The primary purpose of clinical documentation is to collect all information relevant to patient care. Electronic health records enable not only documentation but also the provision of intelligent support functions, such as alerting healthcare professionals to deteriorating liver or kidney function. In the literature, such capabilities are referred to as Clinical Decision Support (CDS). This course explores how CDS functions can be developed and integrated into existing clinical information systems while addressing the typical challenges involved.
- Topics covered in the course include:
- How can medical knowledge be processed automatically?
- How realistic are media portrayals of artificial intelligence?
- Which standards are available for knowledge representation and processing?
- How are Medical Logic Modules (MLMs) developed?
- How can CDS functions be integrated into electronic health records?
- In what ways can CDS functions interact with clinical users?
- How can the practical value of CDS functions be evaluated?
Competencies
Students are able to
- describe the fundamentals of automated knowledge processing.
- distinguish standards for knowledge representation and processing.
- independently develop simple Medical Logic Modules (MLMs).
- integrate clinical decision support (CDS) functions into clinical information systems.
- interpret studies evaluating the benefits of clinical decision support functions.
